the kerala beard

I have often wondered what prompts a person to keep a beard apart from religious reasons . A random spot survey at any public place in kerala will invariably show a number of bearded persons most of whom are not keeping it for religious reasons . Is it because there are not enough barber shops in Kerala and people are averse to shaving it themselves . It also could because they are taking after their idols like Dr KJYesudas and his acolytes like Unni Menon and KGMarkose .
It is surprising because ouside Kerala a person wth a beard is consdered a bit of a extremist or leftist or basically untrustworthy . Little wonder then that once the Malayali gets ouside Kerala he generally hacks his beard off.

calcutta musings

I have often wondered how easy it is to observe the Bengali in a crowd . Ii am talking of the pre internet age and pre cable tv days . The bengali male had a typical angular face possibly with specs and looked as though he was hungry . He would be involved in some discussion or the other most animatedly . In the evenings after his office work he would invariably reach home and after some time go out to maro Adda or basically involve in trivial chit chat . His morning breakfast would consist of in most places a bread toast or muri parboiled rice puffs accompanied with a tea either with milk or with lemon. Invariably the bengali would be a die hard fish eater and fish cooked in mustard oil .And one of the bengalis favourite items would be the head of fish which people from other fis eating communities would avoid . It was said that eating the head of the fish along with the brain improved the mental faculties and intelligence of the person eating it . It is generally thought that that is the reason why Bengalis are more scholarly than others
Coming to the bengali female she is definitely more beautiful than her male counterpart and looks definitely more healthy too . With eyes looking like Goddess Durga she has a heavenly apsara like look about her . And take my word when she wears the sari there is nothing to beat her in this world . There is something great about the way this 6yard piece of cloth looks when draped on her . Along with the chice of blouse low back or low cut or long sleeves or with puffs This is the dream of which Rabindranath Tagore and Satyajit ray spelt their webs. No wonder some of bollywoods most beautiful women have been bengalis , Sharmila Tagore , Rakhee , Mousumi Chatterjee , Suchitra sen, Sushmita sen, Bipasha Basu .Tthere is also madhabi mukerji , rupa ganguly and a whole lot of others.

A friend of mine who came to Calcutta for the first time told me that Bengali women seem to be advanced .when I asked him why he said they wore low cut sleeveless blouses something he had not seen elsewhere in the country in such large numbers . He then added that it could be because of the humidity in Calcutta that they opted for sleeveless and lowcut blouses
